Mountain Living - March 2014
March coming in like a lion!
I believe there is an old saying that "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb". This is particularly true tonight, at least the first part, as we are under a Winter Weather Advisory for all of Haywood County calling for periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. It would seem that after a harsh winter in the mountains that Mother Nature would cut us a break, but such is life in the mountains of western North Carolina. Incidentally, the forecasted high for this weekend is 62 degrees and the Vernal Equinox, the official start of spring, is just two weeks away. It is always tempting to those of us who like to get our hands dirty in the soil to begin to think about spring planting. However, in Haywood County the last frost date is May 10 and any planning prior to that date is subject to grave disappointment. Things continue to progress in Junaluska Highlands with two homes presently under construction. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) tells me another home is under review and construction may begin in the spring. I view this as a favorable sign that our community continues to be a sought after place to live and one that we can all take pride in.
We will hold a community work day this spring to tidy up the neighborhood after the ravages of the winter. Colorful annuals will be planted at the entrance gate and along Breckenridge Road. Trees will be trimmed and/or removed as necessary, and a fresh topping of mulch will be put down for a finishing touch. This has traditionally been a time the folks of Junaluska Highlands come out for a morning of gardening and socialization, followed by a light lunch together. More on this happening as we get a little further into spring.
It always impresses me by the many talents we have among the residents of Junaluska Highlands. Such is the case with Joyce Brunsvold with her traditional and modern designs in her quilting. Joyce is among the many artists whose work is part of the Local Flavors Show at Gallery 86 in Waynesville, now through March 29th. It is well worth the time to visit Gallery 86 and see Joyce's handiworks.
That's all for now. March Madness begins in a few days. Go Heels!
