Mountain Living - August 2014
Looking for great fall colors this year!
There is an Associate Professor of Biology at Western Carolina University by the name of Kathy Gould Mathews who for many years has issues what she calls her Fall Foliage Forecast. Professor Mathews, who specializes in an area of Biology called plant systematics, has issued her 2014 Western North Carolina Fall Foliage Forecast and is calling for “… excellent color in the North Carolina mountains this fall with higher levels of yellow, orange, and red pigments”, beginning in September and continuing on into October. I will not go into the scientific basis of Professor Mathews’ conclusions, as I don’t really understand them myself, but it is exciting to look forward to a more colorful fall here in the mountains. The color should still be blazing for our Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Bethea Welcome Center on the campus of the Lake Junaluska Retreat and Conference Center. I will be putting a letter out in September detailing more about our meeting and hope all can attend.
We have run into an issue on the Montrose Lane slope slide that will require additional funds to properly complete the project. It seems the soil that was extracted from the fill side (south side) of Montrose Lane has a moisture content that is too high to be placed back into the excavated area to fill the Terramesh baskets used to stabilize the slope. Therefore, we have had to contract to bring in dry soil from our sister community, Avalon, to finalize the project. Our Board will be meeting later this month to adopt the 2015 Budget and consider how the total cost of the Montrose Lane remediation project will be paid for. This will be a major topic of discussion at our Annual Meeting in October.
The two homes that were begun late last year are now complete and another home began construction in July. There are rumblings that another home will begin construction later this year or early next year. Please remember the ARC must review and approve all plans for construction or alterations prior to the commencement of construction. All building information and required forms are available on our website. You may also contact our ARC Chairman, Ron Brunsvold, through the communications page on the website.
That’s all for now. Make your plans to attend the Annual Meeting in October.
Mac
