March - a new beginning - Spring is on the way
The month of March. It means many different things to many people. In ancient times, the month of March signaled the beginning of the New Year. In 45 B.C. Julius Caesar set March 25 as the spring equinox, one of only two times during the year that the plane of the earth’s equator passes across the center of the sun. In modern times folks refer to the spring equinox, or vernal equinox, as that time in which daytime and nights are of equal duration. This year, this celebrated event falls on Friday, March 20, 12 days after the beginning of Daylight Saving Time on March 8.
March is also celebrated as the beginning of NCAA basketball conference and tournament play, often referred to as “March Madness”. Those of us who identify with this culture look forward to the plethora of college basketball games that take us into April, culminating with the national championship game in Indianapolis.
No matter what you look forward to in March, the spring equinox, Daylight Saving Time, or basketball madness, March heralds a new beginning, an awaking from the doldrums of winter and a hope for the spring season to come. As Susan and I recently took our dogs on a walk around Lake Junaluska on an especially warm day, the crocus were emerging, singing their song that winter is over. Daffodils and Jonquils are also sprouting and will shortly be displaying their vibrant blooms. We in the Junaluska Highlands community will also awake as well and come out of our winter hibernation and once more get out to meet and great our neighbors. Enjoy this most beautiful part of God’s creation we call the mountains of North Carolina as we celebrate a new beginning in Junaluska Highlands.
That’s all for now.
Mac
