Mountain Living - May 2014
Spring is here!
I believe it is now safe to say that spring has officially come to the mountains of western North Carolina. After a few sub-freezing days in late April, the weather has been absolutely perfect since with cool, crisp mornings and very pleasant afternoons with highs in the upper 60's to low
70' s. After a brutal winter most of the perennials have leafed out and are returning the lush green to the community. Among the exceptions are butterfly bushes and hybrid tea roses along with knock out roses. I am going to give mine another week to see if they will reemerge from their long winter's sleep.
Speaking of greening out, Junaluska Highlands Community Association held its annual spring planting and beautification day earlier this month. 19 residents turned out to trim bushes, rake leaves, pull weeds, plant annuals, and spread mulch at the gate entrance and along Breckenridge Road and down at the pavilion. The community now looks absolutely beautiful as a result of the efforts of these volunteers, who were treated to an old fashion hamburger and hot dog roast after the workday. Our sincere thanks to David and Jan Vittum for organizing, pre-planting, and directing the work crews in this initiative. See the pictures of this happy crew elsewhere on the site.
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has approved plans for another home in Junaluska Highlands and construction is under way. This is in addition to the two homes already under construction and I have received rumors of yet a fourth home that may start shortly. Regarding the ARC, David Vittum has graciously agreed to serve on the ARC along with Patti Surak, and chaired by Ron Brunsvold. Don't forget to get approval of any new plans for construction in Junaluska Highlands from the ARC before you begin construction.
Lastly, the contract for the remediation of the landslide on Montrose Lane has been let and work should begin shortly. The project is expected to be completed in 30 to 60 days and will stabilize the fill side of Montrose Lane and ensure the integrity of the road bed that was damaged by the excessive rains that fell last year. We have also had to effect repairs to the upper pond dam to ensure its stability and integrity.
That's all for now. Enjoy this outstanding springtime in the mountains.
Mac
