Mountain Living - May 2015
May flowers are here!
Remember the old adage “April showers bring May flowers”? It is certainly true this year in Junaluska Highlands. After a very wet April, the Forsythia bloomed right on schedule last month and now the Azaleas and Rhododendrons are getting ready to pop out. Coreopsis, Rudbeckia, and Roses of all kinds will not be far behind. Mother’s Day in the mountains of Western North Carolina looks to be a wonderful weekend.
There is so much going on in Junaluska Highlands this month I can hardly mention it all in this small space. On May 16 we will hold our annual clean up and cook out day. Our “do it all volunteer”, David Vittum, is again organizing the activities and at last count we have 26 folk signed up to pull weeds, plant flowers and shrubs, spread mulch and generally spruce up the neighborhood. Following a morning of getting our hands dirty in the soil, we will have an old fashion cook out at the shelter where we will no doubt experience some good food, libations and jocularity. There are a number of new folks in our community since last year and we will take the time to introduce ourselves and get to know them as neighbors.
In Haywood County, there is the “Whole Blooming Thing” celebration on Saturday, May 9 at Frog Level. This is a time you can purchase your tomato plants and other fruit and vegetable plants for spring garden planting. Master Gardeners will be on hand for advice. But don’t be too quick to plant tender vegetation right away: remember the last frost date in our area is May 15. The weekend of May 8, 9 and May 15,16 is the annual Waynesville Mulch and Compost sale. This is when the town opens up the area where last fall’s leaves have been composting over the winter. Logs, sticks, and limbs have been ground up for mulch and both are available for $10 per pick up load. The site is on Baptist Bible Road, off Russ Avenue.
Last month Lot 15/16 was sold to new owners and ground was broken this month for what will be the 28th hone in Junaluska Highlands. Additionally, plans are moving forward for ground breaking on another Lot shortly and an existing home in the community was recently sold. Again, the comments I am receiving from inquiring real estate brokers would indicate Junaluska Highlands continues to be among the most desirable communities in Haywood County.
That’s all for now. Remember, come out and join us for clean-up day on Saturday, May 16 (rain date will be Saturday, May 23).
