Mountain Living - November 2014
Halloween brought the first snow of the season!
While winter does not officially begin until next month, old man winter paid a visit to Junaluska Highlands earlier this month. Our first measurable snowfall of the season began Halloween night and continued on into the first day of November, depositing some 3 inches of a wet snow in the community. It was a very pretty snow, sticking to the trees and grass but as the roads were still relatively warm, no significant snow or ice accumulated on our roads. Had it been colder to allow the snow and ice to accumulate on the roads our road maintenance contractor was prepared to come scrape the roads and/or put down ice melt to ensure the safety of our residents that had to get out of the community. The contract with our road maintenance contractor provides that the roads be scraped and/or treated whenever necessary, no matter how often it is required, at a fixed cost. What does vary is the expense of ice melt, which last year averaged approximately $400 to $700 per application. However, we will always place the safety of maintaining our roads above whatever expense is necessary to achieve that goal. Our Vice-President, Buck Williams; Director George Patrick; and ARC member, David Vittum will monitor the weather conditions of each snow event and make the appropriate call to our road maintenance contractor as required. Any concerns our residents have regarding our road clearing policies during a snow event can be sent to any of these individuals via the contact tab on this website or directly by phone.
On Saturday, October 18, we held our 2014 Annual Meeting at the Bethea Welcome Center of the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center. The date coincided with the Haywood County Apple Festival and turned out to be a beautiful day weather-wise to be in the mountains. The meeting was attended by 38 homeowners and lot owners. Much information was shared regarding the happenings in Junaluska Highlands, including the 2015 budget and the Montrose Lane mud slide remediation. Later this month, the unofficial minutes of this meeting will be posted on the website. After the meeting was concluded, a social was held at the beautiful home of Jan and David Vittum in Junaluska Highlands and was well attended. Our sincere thanks to Jan and David for opening up their home and providing good food and wonderful hospitality.
That’s all for now. I hope each of you have a joyous and safe Thanksgiving with your families.
Mac
