Mountain Living - January 2015
Happy New Year from WNC!
Happy New Year everyone from the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina and our lovely community of Junaluska Highlands. The frantic times of the holidays are behind us and we can now settle down for what has been predicted to be a very cold winter. With sufficient advance warning of severe weather to come and preparations with stocks of food, fuel, and libations, we will all make it through.
This month I want to reflect on all the folks that work together to make Junaluska Highlands one of the most desirable places to live within Haywood County. We are a tight knit, caring community in which everyone pulls together to improve our lifestyle.
As you enter Junaluska Highlands off Rogers Cove Road, you pass through our estate gate and may wonder who keeps this gate in proper working condition and attends to changing the gate code each quarter. That would be Phil Casso and Wally Surak. Proceeding up Breckenridge Road, we have Buck Williams, George Patrick, and David Vittum (David also maintains our community directory), to thank for the tireless efforts they contribute to maintaining our some 3.5 miles of paved roads by scheduling grounds maintenance to keep the shoulders mowed and the roads clear of debris along with snow removal and salt treatment when weather conditions require. This group also monitors our many street lights and notifies Duke Energy when an outage is detected. As you might imagine, someone has to keep our vendors paid on time and this is the job of Sam Bell and Kathie McCracken, who spend countless hours handling our finances. David McCracken is our liaison to our sister community, Avalon. Kathy Gross maintains our records and minutes from our Board meetings and Annual Meetings. Kathy Bell is our social committee chairwoman and along with the many members of her committee are constantly busy welcoming new residents and lot owners and planning our many social affairs. Our webmaster, Ron Brunsvold, is also the chairman of our ARC (Architectural Review Committee) and along with the other members of his group reviews new building plans to ensure consistency with our Covenants & Restrictions. Seasonal decorations are very quietly done by Vicki Williams and Jan Vittum, and others without even being asked to do so. That leave me with very little to do other than write these messages each month.
There are countless others that I may have failed to name that contribute their time and talents to keeping the community looking good all year long, especially during our annual spring cleanup. I just thought you might want to know who makes Junaluska Highlands the quality community it has a reputation of being. If you have any comments to any of these individuals, you may contact them by clicking on the contact form on this website.
That’s all for now. Everyone stay safe and warm.
Mac
